Dry Eye Management

Dry Eye Disease is a common condition affecting people of all ages. It occurs when there is reduced volume or quality of tears required to keep the surface of the eye sufficiently lubricated. This is a chronic and progressive disease which requires proper diagnosis and management.

Symptoms may include

  • Dryness

  • Blurred Vision

  • Watering/Tearing

  • Itchiness/Grittiness

  • Redness

  • Irritation

 

Causes

  • MGD (dysfunction or obstruction of oil glands) - this is responsible for at least 60% of Dry Eye cases

  • Age

  • Environmental factors (hot, air conditioning, windy)

  • Medication side effects (HRT, antihistamines, antidepressants, anxiolytics)

  • Hormonal changes

  • Increased use of phone/tablet

  • Poor diet/dehydration

 

Treatment

  • Treatment of underlying MGD 

  • Control environmental factors

  • Supportive lubricants

  • Appropriate Tear Substitutes

  • Improved blinking patterns
